Heat pumps — one system for Solano heat and mild winters

A heat pump is an air conditioner that also runs in reverse. In summer it dumps heat outside. In winter it pulls heat from outdoor air and moves it in. Solano County is a good climate for that. Winters are mild. Summers still need real cooling, especially inland. You do not need a mountain-grade heating system to stay warm here, and you do need something that can handle a 95-degree afternoon in Vacaville or Dixon.

That does not make a heat pump the right answer for every house. An air conditioner paired with a gas furnace is still the right fit when the ducts, the gas service, and the budget point that way. A heat pump is the right fit when you want one electric system, when you are already replacing both boxes, or when a ductless mini-split is cleaner than new ducts in an older Vallejo or Benicia house. We will tell you which one we would put in our own house on your lot.

What the visit looks like

What the visit looks like. For a repair: we check defrost, reversing valve, refrigerant circuit, outdoor coil, and backup heat. A heat pump that “blows cold” in winter is sometimes in a normal defrost cycle and sometimes a failed sensor or valve. We measure; we do not guess. For a new system: we look at ducts, electrical service, insulation, and how the house is oriented. Vallejo (Climate Zone 4) and the inland Zone 12 cities do not get the same load. We size to the house. Title 24 work is permitted work. We do not skip that.

Older homes without usable ducts are where mini-splits earn their keep. That is common in Vallejo and Benicia. Inland tract homes with decent ducts can take a ducted heat pump in place of the AC, with or without keeping a furnace as backup, depending on the design. We will not sell you a system your panel cannot feed.

Repair versus replace

Repair versus replace follows the same honest line as AC repair and furnace repair. Under about 10 years with a contained failure: repair. Twelve to 15-plus years, R-22, or a repair over about a third of replacement: written options. Some homeowners qualify for utility or state rebates on heat pumps; we will point you at current programs rather than invent a dollar amount. Hours and related work

Shop hours: Monday–Saturday, 7AM–7PM. If the heat pump is your only heat and it is down after hours, call the owners — emergency HVAC, seven days. No invented Sunday shop hours.
